Apple has put sport and fitness at the heart of its launch of the Apple Watch Series 2.

Making the smartwatch waterproof to a depth of 50 metres and giving building in GPS tracking, means the company could target the segment currently dominated by Fitbit and position the device as the perfect companion for swimmers, cyclists and runners.

Fitness tracking is still the number one function that users of connected wristwear demand, and Apple has delivered two highly desirable features with waterproofing and GPS, which allows people to leave their smartphones behind.

In terms of cost, the Apple Watch 2 price has been set at something similar to previous years, with the base Watch model costing $369 (about £275). The original Apple Watch, now called the Apple Watch Series 1, will cost $269 (about £200).There’s also a new ceramic version which will set you back $1249 from the start – in the UK the price will be roughly $1600.

The Apple Watch 2 will go on sale at the same time as the iPhone 7 – September 16th.
