Tackleberry shares:

I hated always crawling under the tree to

a)Check whether or not I needed to add water
b) checking to see when the water resevoir was full

SO, let’s make something that will help us with both!

The wiring was pretty simple, since i planned on using the coin cell batteries (LR44); no resistors! I used a NO switch between the batteries and the LED to minimize power usage and not drain the batteries. I soldered and covered all the connections with heat-shrink tubing. I didn’t really secure the wiring to anything inside the funnel’s recess; I just shoved it all in there, so I could easily change the batteries as needed.

The wiring was simply cable tied to the extra dishwasher tubing I had laying around. Simply feed the tube down the tree, snap the holder onto one of the tree stand screws, and VOILA! I no longer have to crawl under the tree!

A bonus is that my kids like to water the tree now; how about that!?

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

The Adafruit Learning System has dozens of great tools to get you well on your way to creating incredible works of engineering, interactive art, and design with your 3D printer! If you’ve made a cool project that combines 3D printing and electronics, be sure to let us know, and we’ll feature it here!
