EASY AT SWITCH POSITIONING W/FREE 3D PRINTED CAMERA MOUNTS

Bill Binko of ATMakers.org designed a solution for mounting AT (assistive technology) switches to tripod mounts with 3D printing. This allows them to be positioned and mounted in different configurations so people with disabilities can more easily access them.

Bill makes educational content and tutorials with a focus on assistive technology (AT). Tripod accessories are pretty common and standardized, so he thought it’d be a great platform to use with AT switches. In his video, he demonstrates a 3D printed part he designed in Fusion 360, and shows how to install hardware (1/4-20 T Nut) so folks can DIY their own mounting setup. Bill’s written tutorial has photos and step by step instructions. If you’re interested in more DIY assistive tech projects, check out his guides and tutorials.

This project uses 3D Printed adapters to add a standard 1/4″-20 (pronounced “Quarter-Twenty”) camera mount to common AT Switches. This is a great project for STEM programs that have an idle 3D Printer and need service hours and is a huge improvement for AT Switch users… This video shows how to install a T-Nut to add a 1/4″-20 camera mount to any 3D Printed object. Specifically, we are adding them to AT Switches, but the skill should transfer to anything you want to mount using camera equipment.

Every Thursday is #3dthursday here at Adafruit! The DIY 3D printing community has passion and dedication for making solid objects from digital models. Recently, we have noticed electronics projects integrated with 3D printed enclosures, brackets, and sculptures, so each Thursday we celebrate and highlight these bold pioneers!

Have you considered building a 3D project around an Arduino or other microcontroller? How about printing a bracket to mount your Raspberry Pi to the back of your HD monitor? And don’t forget the countless LED projects that are possible when you are modeling your projects in 3D!

The Adafruit Learning System has dozens of great tools to get you well on your way to creating incredible works of engineering, interactive art, and design with your 3D printer! If you’ve made a cool project that combines 3D printing and electronics, be sure to let us know, and we’ll feature it here!
