Photonics – saviour of data centers

More bandwidth, higher speeds and lower energy costs
As of 2018 more than 4 billion people worldwide are using the internet. Data traffic is growing at alarming rates and expected to double in size in the next three years. In the foreseeable future the current silicon chip based internet infrastructure will be unable to cope with the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth.

Photonics technology reveals the way forward with the creation of ultrafast chips and fibre optic cables based on light sources. By using light as a way of transmitting data these technologies far outperform the existing copper solutions. The speed photonics technology offers is indispensable in transitioning from 4G to 5G broadband.

Photonics provides the bandwidth, speed, reach and flexibility needed to cope with the growing demand for data processing. And it does so at much lower energy costs, decreasing the carbon footprint of the internet. As such photonics is the enabling technology for all future wireless and wired broadband technologies.

The saviour of data centers
Photonics is also the saviour of data centers. In 2017 data centres used 3% of the world’s total electricity, a number expected to double every four years. Data centers are faced with the double challenge to increase their processing speed while reducing energy demand. Photonics addresses both problems at once. It has the capacity to support internet speeds of 200 Terabytes per second. And since photonic chips don’t require cooling, they lower energy use compared to current silicon based datacentre infrastructure.
